Rivierenland Hospital Switches to Pure Storage for Better VDI Performance and User Experience

All-flash gives the hospital a future-proof solution for smoothly expanding storage capacity into the future without disruption or loss of investment

Amsterdam, October 31, 2016 — Pure Storage (NYSE:PSTG), the market’s leading independent solid-state array vendor, announced that Ziekenhuis Rivierenland in Tiel/The Netherlands has migrated to the all-flash systems from Pure Storage for primary storage. For the hospital, providing data and applications 24/7 is critical and moving to Pure’s all-flash storage gives the hospital the performance, reliability and ease of management that it demands, as well as a future-proof solution for smoothly expanding storage capacity into the future without disruption or loss of investment.

The hospital was looking to replace its severely fragmented and unmanageable desktop environment and extend its virtualized infrastructure to include more end-users. But a high level of user experience had to be guaranteed: A requirement was that the new virtual desktop had to have the same response time and features as a traditional hospital workstation. Jacco Juist, ICT manager at Rivierenland: “The very fast I/O processing as well as the corresponding low latency (under one millisecond) which Pure Storage offers is now the foundation for our enhanced user experience we were seeking for. We're also very happy with the reliability and the extreme low level of maintenance of the system."

The main reason for choosing Pure Storage was the option for in-line data reduction. The Pure Storage system significantly outperforms the competition with an average of 8:1, and this is part of what makes the system so fast. Above from that, low maintenance, easy installation, and reliability were also plus points. But the hospital management first wanted some proof in practice before making the decision. Jacco Juist explains: “That's why we wanted to see the Pure Storage systems actually working in a hospital environment. The Dutch team from Pure Storage put us in contact with partner FlexVirtual, and they organized a reference visit to the a hospital in Belgium, that was already running a Pure Storage system. After seeing it in action in that hospital, we were sold!”

FlexVirtual implemented two FlashArray systems – one of it redundant - each with a capacity of 5.5 TB. With this capacity, each system can theoretically support between 4,000 and 5,000 simultaneous users. The hospital has successfully transitioned to VDI, and is now investigating how other high workloads such as PACS can benefit from the Pure Storage technology. Rivierenland has confidence for the future since each FlashArray can non-disruptively scale to over 1 PB of effective capacity.

Theo van Teylingen, Regional Director Benelux, Pure Storage: “Rivierenland has experienced tremendous performance benefits by moving to Pure Storage. Our all-flash systems are future proof as well, and we are excited Rivierenland is looking into expanding the use of all-flash for other workloads in the hospital.”
