FlashBlade™ and FlashArray chosen over public cloud

Industry: A Financial Services Customer
Use Case:
Analytics; SQL Server, Oracle; VMware vSphere; Citrix XenDesktop
Competition:
AWS, EMC

CUSTOMER SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS

This happy customer has expanded their FlashArray portfolio and also selected FlashBlade™ as their data platform for logs reporting & analytics as well as monitoring security in their trading systems. They currently use the logs for reactive troubleshooting with a vision to build a platform to run real-time analytics for root-cause correlation.

The customer had considered transitioning their log-archiving storage to Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. They have high logging needs as they write several TB of messages a day between systems. They evaluated Splunk running in AWS. Their TCO analysis on AWS revealed a cost of several million dollars a year for a license of several TB of data a day, which assumed no growth. They did not want an unpredictable cost model and they found that a FlashBlade architecture was several hundred thousand dollars per year vs. several million dollars a year in the cloud.

With Pure FlashBlade the customer now has a predictable scalable cost model that, on this occasion, is better for them than a public cloud cost model.  The customer also decided it is simpler to manage on-premise storage than it is to manage the public cloud. The scale-out design allows the customer to easily scale to meet storage requirements as they expect significant growth. The customer also now has the ability to trade in blades for larger sizes in the future and drive down the cost curve.

The customer accelerated database performance 10x over existing VMAX storage

Industry: A Financial Services Customer
Use Case:
  VMware vSphere; Hyper-V; Oracle
Competition:
 HPE, EMC, IBM

CUSTOMER SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS

Pure’s ability to enhance Oracle performance and reduce latency is a major benefit to this company. With Pure, the customer accelerated database performance 10x over existing legacy VMAX storage, which will add significant value to data analytics, facilitating larger data sets and higher-quality business knowledge and insights.

The key operational benefit was simplicity. For example, it took one hour to configure Pure for a POC, compared to several days for a HPE/3Par solution. The bank also saw value in Evergreen Storage™, with no more migrations required and extended/simplified lifecycle management.

This customer selected Pure, ending a decade long run of EMC as the exclusive storage provider for the them. Compared to VMAX, the bank has halved its overall annual storage budget since moving to Pure, and time to deployment was one-quarter of the time. They have tripled storage capacity with Pure over the last several years, with no need to increase headcount. Today they have over 50 arrays including FlashArray//X.

Massive TCO savings vs. HP and EMC

Industry: A Financial Services Customer
Use Case: Oracle; Citrix XenDesktop
Competition: HP, EMC

CUSTOMER SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS

Pure's value proposition aligns well with the customers strategy and goals: to transform its operating model to achieve higher efficiency, reduced complexity, better resilience and resolvability. Pure will enable a new hosted internal offering (consolidated from VMAX and Exadata) which will allow an improved six-tier SLA model to the customer business units, standardized on a single platform - Pure. Superior data reduction (6-10:1) plus Evergreen Storage™ results in a TCO savings of 120 million USD over several years, with the addition of lowered risk, increased performance (8x vs VMAX), and improved agility for critical business systems underpinned by Oracle.

Not to mention 75% datacenter space reduction and reduced Oracle licensing. Pure also enables the collapsing of Dev/Test environments (a quarter of the data footprint), providing even higher levels of data reduction.

More productive brokers and financial advisors with the move off EMC

Industry: A Financial Services Customer
Use Case: VMware vSphere; VMware View
Competition: HP, EMC

CUSTOMER SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS

Financial advisors and brokers are the lifeblood of this financial institution, so anything that makes them more productive is a strategic investment. That was the purpose of a VDI initiative the company started but could never complete because the incumbent storage environment failed to perform on multiple occasion.

A months-long evaluation of XtremIO and Pure resulted in a decision to go with Pure. On a performance basis, Pure was equal on writes but outperformed on reads. High-availability and NDU testing were overwhelmingly in Pure's favor.

The company is on a multi-year campaign to lower operating costs and is looking forward to significant cost savings with Pure, compared to the annual maintenance bill they receive from Dell/EMC. Ease of management was also a key requirement. The installation of Pure for the PoC took less than an hour compared to days for XtremIO. Performance was key to solving the VDI problem, and we over-delivered on every expectation: average data-reduction rates of 10:1; sub-millisecond latencies; amazing ease of use; transparent upgrades; and solid replication.

Improved application performance for doctors and software developers by moving off Dell

Industry: A Healthcare Customer
Use Case:
  PostgreSQL, EMR - Allscripts
Competition:
 Dell

CUSTOMER SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS

In early 2015, this customer was planning a consolidation of its data centers and needed additional capacity to make the move work. After seeing our //M series launch, they were sold on the prospect of gaining an additional 20TB of raw storage while shrinking space demands by one RU.

Data center moves are complicated, and the operational simplicity of Pure made the decision easy versus extending maintenance for its existing legacy Compellent array. Pure was instrumental in the success of the data center consolidation with a //M50, so the customer decided to upgrade their FA-420 to an //M as well. With that upgrade, all production applications moved to Pure. Consolidating all workloads onto Pure netted a positive ROI versus staying with legacy Compellent and paying maintenance for two more years. Elimination of Compellent will enable the customer to reduce cage rentals by two full racks.

Pure’s consistent performance has enabled the physicians’ network to continue to scale without performance bottlenecks. All-flash performance for its test/development environment will speed development and using replication between arrays will put new releases into production much faster. The IT team has been thoroughly impressed with the //M50 performance and has noticed that it has smoothed out their workload performance to a virtual flat line of sub millisecond latencies even during peak times. With test/dev moving to //M as well, they hope to see the same performance improvements there.

“Do you like your admin's to sleep well at night? Move to Pure and they will.”

Telco

Converging Data Lakes into a Flexible, Shared Data Hub

Industry: A Telecommunications Customer
Use Case:
HPC/Technical/AI – Analytics, Vertica
Competition:
White box DAS

CUSTOMER SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS:

This global telecommunications company is all in on FlashBlade™ Multi-Chassis with S3A for their next-generation data lakes, including the Vertica big-data analytics application. FlashBlade provides stellar S3 performance and ensures no stranded capacity or I/O performance.

S3A will allow the customer to reduce replicas from 3 to 1, driving a lower TCO. And decoupling compute and storage will simplify management by allowing them to add to either storage or compute based on what is required. Multi-Chassis provides a single name space for 2.5PB usable capacity. This means fewer mount points to manage and increased performance utilizing 75 blades vs. 15 in a single chassis.

The carrier’s Big Data group needed a solution to provide dense scale at low environmental costs. They want to eliminate tiering and have one storage device to handle high-performant workloads as well as cold data. By implementing a reliable all-flash system, they can focus on applications and not on managing tiers of disk.

The company is moving away from some of their more traditional data analytics to Vertica and plan to standardize on FlashBlade with NFSv3 as the access protocol. The Vertica deployments are housed in “containers” with very stringent power and space requirements. FlashBlade drives a higher density with a lower environmental footprint than any other solution. The objective is to move from a data lake to a shared storage environment that can be accessed via multiple applications ranging from Vertica to ELK and eventually AI via NVIDIA.
