What is Object Storage?

Object storage is a data storage architecture in which data is stored and managed as self-contained units called objects. Each object contains a key, data, and optional metadata. Flat, API-friendly, and highly scalable, object storage is the format of choice for public cloud storage services like Amazon S3 and on-premises solutions like Pure FlashBlade®.

People also ask:

1. Object storage vs. File storage vs. Block storage

  • Object storage is a storage format in which data is stored in discrete units called objects.
  • File storage is the storage format most people are familiar with—data is stored in files you can interact with in folders within a hierarchical file directory.
  • Block storage breaks data up into separate pieces of fixed-sized blocks of data that each get a unique identifier.

2. What is File Storage?

File storage is a data storage format in which data is stored and managed as files within folders. In the storage world, file storage is used by direct-attached storage (DAS) and network-attached storage (NAS) systems.

3. What are the Benefits of File Storage?

The benefits of file storage include:

  • User-friendly interface: A simple file management and sharing system makes it easy to use across an organisation.
  • Easy-to-scale archives: Each file has a unique address and can be stored in a scale-out system manually or automatically.
  • Data protection: File storage has been around for a long time, so there are many standardized technologies and protocols for data protection.

4. What is unified fast file and object storage (UFFO)?

Unified fast file and object (UFFO) storage is a new category of data storage that consolidates two traditionally separate storage paradigms—file and object storage—into one performant data solution. It enables you to replace a siloed collection of data warehouses, network-attached storage (NAS) devices, and direct-attached storage (DAS) devices with a single scale-out storage solution that delivers multidimensional performance at scale. FlashBlade is the first UFFO storage platform.

5. Why fast object storage?

While object storage has traditionally been treated as a convenient way to archive large amounts of data, the growth in cloud-native apps which use object storage as their default storage has created a new market for higher performing object storage. Fast object storage combines the ease of access and scale-out convenience of traditional object storage with the speed and performance needed to support the demanding workloads of cloud-native applications.

Don't Take Our Word for It

We work with the best organisations across all industries.

"By separating our capacity from compute, we’re able to get more out of our compute resources, which gives us the ability to ask questions at an unprecedented scale.

Greg Bowman
Director, Folding@home

"Our data works as hard as our delivery drivers. It’s all about speed—the ability to ingest data, analyse it, and feed it back into actionable channels."
