University of Texas at Dallas’ storage system was a Sun/Oracle system that, at the time, performed adequately. But as they tried to take the next step, which was to add support for virtualization and a transition to 10 gigabit Ethernet networks. They expected storage to work the way it always had – just add more when you need it. To their surprise, they weren’t getting the performance they wanted. Between the network and the storage, they were getting a lot of latency.
