Buenos Aires, Argentina – December 7, 2016 - Pure Storage (NYSE:PSTG), the market’s leading independent solid-state array vendor, today announced that Despegar.com, Latin America’s leading online travel service, has selected Pure Storage to support its OpenStack cloud infrastructure and host the company’s databases.
With Pure Storage’s all-flash arrays, Despegar’s software development teams produce new applications and features in a fraction of the time it used to take, giving customers fast access to the latest features and services and strengthening its leadership position.
To maintain its competitive differentiation and retain customer loyalty, Despegar.com continually adds new features to its website. The company built a private cloud environment using the OpenStack architecture to provide its 600-count software development team with a flexible, robust platform. However, its aging IT infrastructure limited the number of new applications and upgrades that could be added each week. Additionally, rising latencies in the storage infrastructure threatened to degrade the responsiveness of the customer-facing website.

Founded in 1999, Despegar.com has risen from an Argentinian start-up to claim 60 percent market share among travel websites in the region. Customers can research their travel plans and book airline tickets, hotels, car rental, cruises, buses, temporary rental reservations using their mobile devices or personal computers. Its operations have grown to cover Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Spain, and the United States.
The integration of four FlashArray//M20 arrays has allowed the company to improve IOPS, reduce latency, utilize deduplication and compression and perform non-disruptive upgrades. By enabling an agile deployment model through a new KVM OpenStack-based IT infrastructure, the company has increased updates and new applications placement from three-to-five per week to 2,000. This huge increase is also caused by Despegar removing a big barrier within their development process: developers who initially were depending on operations personnel to provision the development infrastructure and quality assurance (QA) teams to test applications before and after going into production, can now deploy software themselves, without depending on the IT operations staff.

Today, developers are using a DevOps approach to implement applications in a much more agile and dynamic manner, as well as provisioning cloud environments on demand, without IT assistance,” Anders said.
After moving the database onto FlashArray//M20, production queries on Oracle that used to take 10 minutes are now completed in less than 60 seconds. Additionally, Despegar.com has been able to maintain 24/7 availability for web services, development environments, and transactional systems.
