Resistance to the open-source database appears to be fading in many enterprises, finally, as these organizations struggle to accommodate diverse, modern, and evolving workloads. A market intelligence report on the enterprise storage market from BWG Strategy finds that while traditional RMDBs remain dominant in enterprise environments, NoSQL, high-performance, and cloud-first solutions are definitely on the rise.

“My SQL, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL are the most popular, open-source solutions in use.” —Modern Storage for Open Source Databases: 2020 Market Intelligence Report.”

What You’ll Learn in the Report

BWG’s report, Modern Storage for Open Source Databases: 2020 Market Intelligence Report, is based on a survey of more than 100 technical executives and enterprise storage decision makers that was conducted in mid-2020. Here’s a quick look at some of the key findings and actionable insights presented in the report:

  • Database Technology Adoption: Organizations are adding new technology faster than they’re displacing legacy systems. And nearly one-third of enterprises (31%) report that big data technology, like Hadoop, is well-established in their organization.
  • Open-Source Database Roadmaps: Large organizations are now embracing a variety of open-source database alternatives. Leading the pack: MySQL, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL.
  • Problems With Modern Workloads: Many enterprises are facing growing challenges with cloud, hybrid, containerized, and graph stores. More than two-thirds (69%) of respondents report that they don’t expect any challenges with NoSQL databases.
  • Strategic Factors Driving Adoption: More than half of respondents (51%) point to security as a top factor driving adoption of a new storage solution. And most enterprises seek a streamlined, all-in-one storage solution that can interface with their departmental databases.
  • Features That Drive Adoption: While most decision makers say they “want it all,” features, like efficiency at high capacity, are of the greatest importance.

The BWG report also examines the pain points and challenges that enterprises face when running modern workloads on their existing storage infrastructure. Additionally, the report offers insight into enterprises’ priorities for key applications in the next 12 months.

Top Concern: Unpredictable Performance of Underlying Storage Infrastructure

It’s clear from BWG’s research that, as enterprises expand their use of open-source database options, many of these organizations are eager to find a simplified storage solution that can interface with the open-source databases in their environments. They’re looking for flexible storage solutions like Pure Storage, which can provide predictable performance, handle unplanned evolutions of workloads, and much more.

“I love Pure Storage. In all my past jobs I have had at one point or another a Pure array. When running SQL workloads and even NoSQL workloads, Pure is rock solid and provides benefits we don't get in other storage solutions. We will be looking to expand the infrastructure with Pure in the coming months.”
