What Is Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM)?

Modern data centers are complex ecosystems that can be challenging to run and manage for many organisations.   • Capacity analytics: Good DCIM tools have the capability to analyse capacity data to identify data usage peaks and valleys, adding value by identifying problem areas.
  • Power draw data: Both past and current power usage data can be used to determine peak and average usage over time periods ranging from hours to months.
  • Asset data: Information on data centre assets can include how many and what types of devices and systems the data centre uses.
  • Physical security data: This includes information on who is accessing the data centre and when. This data covers both real-time and historical data.
  • Sustainability data: Going further than just monitoring asset power draws, sustainability covers how much and what type of renewable energy a data centre is using. Analysis of this data can tell data centre operators the percentage of their total power use that comes from renewable sources, as well as CO2 emissions for their given energy use.

All of this data, combined, allows DCIM to be an incredibly valuable resource for data centre optimisation.

Here’s a quick, step-by-step guide to implementing DCIM:

  1. Assessment: Conduct a thorough assessment of the existing data centre infrastructure, including hardware, software, and operational processes.
  2. Define goals: Define the goals and objectives of the DCIM implementation, including improving efficiency, reducing downtime, or meeting sustainability goals.
  3. Select a solution: Choose a DCIM solution that can adapt to current and future growth.
  4. Conduct asset discovery: Invest time in creating an accurate asset and documentation list to feed into the DCIM software.
  5. Implement a pilot: Conduct a pilot implementation to identify any potential issues and refine your deployment strategy before full-scale implementation.
  6. Set regular reviews: Establish a schedule for regular reviews and updates to the DCIM system to align with changes in the data centre ecosystem as well as changing business needs.
  7. Continuous improvement: Regularly gather feedback, analyse performance metrics, and make adjustments to optimise the DCIM software.
