Pure Storage Launches ObjectEngine, Cloud-Native Data Protection Built for Modern Enterprises

Less Than Six Months After Acquisition, Pure Storage Integrates StorReduce to Offer Always-On Restore to Cloud and On-Premises

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – February 19, 2019 — Pure Storage (NYSE: PSTG), the data solutions leader that helps innovators build a better world with data, today announced ObjectEngine™, the industry’s first data protection platform purpose-built for flash and cloud, to enable faster recovery than ever before. Designed to enable data centricity for the enterprise and built on cloud-native technologies from recently acquired StorReduce, ObjectEngine further unifies cloud and on-premises with seamless, rapid backup and recovery across both. The launch of the ObjectEngine platform comes just months after the acquisition of StorReduce, the flash-native deduplication technology designed to enable user-friendly, cost-effective recovery and backup to the public cloud.

According to industry research, 57 percent of enterprises are likely to change their existing data protection solution within the next two years. Legacy approaches to data protection were built for a world in which data is a liability, not a strategic, value-added asset. Today’s solutions can take hours or days to recover business-critical data in an environment where real-time has become consumer expectation. With ObjectEngine, enterprises can finally implement a modern approach to data protection, built from the ground-up for contemporary challenges, to restore on-demand and enable use of data in the cloud.

“For too long, backup and protection has been an insurance policy rather than a strategic asset. In today’s ultra-competitive environment, organizations need every advantage possible to ensure they get the most value out of their data. That means fast recovery to ensure data is back in production use as quickly as possible -- modern organizations simply cannot afford to wait days or weeks,” said Matt Burr, General Manager for FlashBlade, Pure Storage. “ObjectEngine offers an evolved, cloud-centric approach to business continuity that can help forward-looking customers do more with their data.”

The majority of today’s solutions are built for a “disk-to-disk-to-tape” approach, meaning that hot and warm data are stored on disk while historical or backup data goes to tape, where it is largely inaccessible. Legacy backup appliances optimized to back up data are 10x slower when data needs to be restored. Today, historical data is business’ most critical currency – it needs to be readily accessible at a moment’s notice.

With ObjectEngine, customers can modernize their entire data protection strategy to a “flash-to-flash-to-cloud” approach and meet increasingly stringent backup and restore SLAs without any change to their existing backup workflow. For customers that have built data protection processes with leading backup software vendors like Veritas, Veeam and Commvault, ObjectEngine simply works under the same cover.

ObjectEngine allows customers to take advantage of cloud economics and a pay-as-you-go model, and instead of waiting hours or days for business to recover, customers can be back online in minutes. The solution will be available in two configurations:

Ultra-Fast. Delivers 25 TB/HR backup performance and 15 TB/HR restore performance, with the most advanced deduplication engine on the market.
Efficient. Reduces storage and bandwidth costs by up to 97 percent.

Object Fabric. Secure, enterprise-ready platform built with a cloud object storage virtualization layer offering 11 nines of durability in the cloud.
Cloud-Native. Native S3 interface that enables openness, integration and data portability.
Single Namespace. Offers internally replicated global namespace, a single pane of glass for data across hybrid cloud.
Scalable. Near-linear scaling to deliver 100+ petabyte and 100+ terabyte-per-hour performance in the cloud.

“In today’s business environment, smart leaders understand that if data is their most important organizational asset, data recovery is an equally critical investment,” said Steve McDowell, Senior Analyst, Moor Insights & Strategies. “ObjectEngine provides Pure customers with an evolved approach to backup and restore, one that focuses primarily on powerful, reliable restoration and reuse that ensures no slowdowns due to loss of mission-critical data.”

Northwest Evaluation Center (NWEA) provides an adaptive, web-based standardized testing platform used by more than 530 school districts across 140 countries. NWEA relies on low-latency, high-performance storage to continue growth in today’s market.

NTT Communications Cloud Services provides infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) to data centers worldwide. NTT utilizes one of the world’s largest and most advanced backbone networks, paired with a broad range of data-center services.

“One of the key benefits we’ve enjoyed with ObjectEngine is its ease of deployment. As an organization, we need to be able to programmatically deploy infrastructure to meet ever-evolving business needs,” said Doug Underwood, Senior Director, Cloud Services, NTT Communications Cloud Services. “To do that, we have to be able to install infrastructure ourselves. We were able to fully deploy ObjectEngine in half an hour, without cloud, virtual machine or container experts required for the implementation.”

General availability of ObjectEngine is planned for the first half of 2019.
