What is NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF)?

NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) is an extension of the NVMe network protocol to Ethernet and Fibre Channel delivering faster and more efficient connectivity between storage and servers as well as a reduction in CPU utilization of application host servers.

WHY IS NVMe-oF THE FUTURE?

The benefits of NVMe-oF include faster connectivity between storage and applications on servers as well as more efficient CPU usage. This enables further consolidation in the data center of apps that traditionally rely on Direct Attached Storage (DAS), which will be able to run on shared networked storage, given faster network speed and broader bandwidth. NVMe-oF thus provides additional data center and network consolidation as both SAN and DAS application infrastructure silos leverage a single, efficient shared storage infrastructure.
The term Gartner has coined for this approach is Shared Accelerated Storage.
NVMe-oF also allows external storage to essentially match the latency of direct attached storage and is significantly more efficient at storage IO processing than iSCSI and makes the entire architecture more parallel, avoiding bottlenecks in modern applications.
