Breakthrough to Something NEW with Shawn Rosemarin, Prakash Darji, and Murli Thirumale

Shawn Rosemarin: Hi, I'm Shawn Rosemarin, worldwide vice president of emerging technology solutions here at Pure. Over the next 30 minutes my colleagues Murli Thirumale, and Prakash Darji and I invite you to go on a journey with us well beyond the bounds of traditional storage. A journey where people process and technology will evolve in order to deliver breakthroughs that will power your next generation of growth and the new economy. But before we do that, let's start by taking a look back at the last 18 months. There is absolutely no doubt that digital transformation went from being an initiative over the last 10 years to becoming the initiative of the Year in 2020, and 2021, with retail being fueled by etail pharma being fueled by the speed of research, healthcare being fueled by the speed of decision making, and financial services being fueled by FinTech powering the lending and investing around the globe. For most of us, it also powered the productivity or worked from home fueled by software as a service and cloud. The fact is, every industry has been transformed. And it's been transformed forever. But it's really been transformed by applications. And applications started as far back as 1948 when Manchester baby was built as the world's first store program, to show the data could be written and read within a computer system. Its first job find the highest proper divisor of two to the power of 18. This program consisted of 17 instructions, ran for about 52 minutes before reaching the correct answer of 131,072. You see it across this application, though, Manchester baby performed about three and a half million operations for an effective CPU speed of around 1100 I ops Wow, have applications ever come a long way. But it's not just the apps, it's how we've accessed them. And the data they've produced from the days of terminals, that allowed us to access mainframes to desktops, allowing us to access client server, to the web browsers, the power of our web apps, and now our phones and our personal devices, the power of modern apps. But it doesn't stop there. The Next Generation iteration will have machines talking to other machines pervasively through applications. And also talking to us at the edge. You see, the reality is application modernization continues to accelerate. And with that many of us under are under immense pressure to modernize our applications. And you know, we have made progress. At first we re hosted them, we lifted and shifted those apps. And then we look to refactor or even re architect them. But the fact is many applications that exist today and have existed for decades are simply working. And they will continue to power critical systems of record for the foreseeable future. And so in order for us to be realistic, we have to come to terms with the fact that the future, and the future ahead of us must accommodate both traditional apps, and modern apps, even those being developed in real time. And the both traditional modern apps will need to live and interact with one another and allow data to interoperate seamlessly and efficiently. The problem in achieving this though, comes down to the contrast and operating environments between traditional and modern apps. Specifically, what we have learned in conversations with our customers is that retrofitting legacy infrastructure solutions will not get us there. No progress has been made in compute. We adopted virtual machines and networking, we adopted virtual networking. And in storage, we tried to move to Software Defined storage. In fact, a few companies have attempted to fully separate their storage software from traditional storage controllers. And modern apps. Well, they're built to handle it, they accommodated it pretty good. But traditional apps have been a challenge. They've been a challenge with respect to complex compatibility matrices, unpredictable performance and inconsistent availability. The fact is, it just didn't work. In fact, it failed. And it's the wrong strategy at the end of the day. But with these failures, traditional storage vendors have stopped short of true innovation, resulting in their data services being rigid, siloed, inefficient and expensive, most importantly, proprietary, and based on old technology and old standards. Unknown: This is our challenge. It's time to bridge storage and data services between traditional and modern apps. And it's time to bring those services and those data services to any infrastructure and allow them to operate anywhere be in the data center, the cloud and the edge. But for us to get here we need to stop thinking about storage as a box with a set capacity and a set performance. And instead start thinking about how you are going to consume data services. This is a critical change in our thinking, forces us to think about what we heard earlier this week from NASA and Roblox and gardener and agents. And ultimately ask yourself, can your existing storage and data architecture support the pace of change from continuous integration and continuous development? pushing hundreds of changes a day into your environment? Can it support the distributed nature of these applications? allowing for global and always on access? Can it support the scale requirements to deliver a positive experience no matter? What happens? Can it support the stringent compliance and governance requirements from your risk officers that are growing every single year? And can they support the real time analytics, the right now analytics that are core to your business case. In order to get here, we must consider what outcomes are most important, we must consider how to choose the right data services partner. a partner that can accelerate your time to market your time to value your time to insights, a partner that can help you like we help NASA to ingest vast amounts of data and speed learnings with AI and ml on Earth and in space. How we help agents to find the best job candidates versus sifting through hundreds of resumes. How NASA uses AI and ml to assistant helmet to helmet communications in space. A partner needs to also help with dynamic scalability, unpredictable scalability, like we helped Roblox to add an entire year's worth of users in a single week with poor works. How we helped ages scale from 3500 to 130,000 tests. But all the while ensuring always on data protection and resiliency. Even in the face of a ransomware attack, and operating cost reduction, operating cost reduction that can only be achieved when those services are consumption based and delivered as a service. Over the last 11 years, Pure Storage has significantly disrupted the storage status quo, helping over 8,000 customers to modernize their core, and free up time and energy to better support their business growth and innovation. Five years ago, we saw the need for a unified fast file and object platform that could deliver performance unprecedented performance and scale built to handle the world of analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. To date, Pure has sold nearly a billion dollars in Flash blade, and it's powering the world's most transformative applications. Three years ago, we brought the agility and flexible consumption of the cloud into the data center with Pure as-a-Service finally allowing customers to consume storage truly as a service in the data center and extend it natively into the cloud with cloud watch store. In the last year, we brought industry leading data protection to our entire portfolio data protection to insulate our customers from ransomware attacks and allow them to restore at speeds of five petabytes a day in the event of a breach. In addition, last fall, we acquired port works the world's leading data services platform for Kubernetes. And you know what moving forward, you can continue to expect the same disruption innovation from Pure as we continue to help customers to simplify their data services architecture, across both traditional and modern apps. As a testament to our leadership here, today, we're proud to announce several portfolio announcements both of which support our modern data experience vision. First, to deliver on our vision for multi cloud multi cloud ready solutions the power modern apps, we're proud to announce the new release support works enterprise with the expanded port works platform. We are now redefining storage for modern applications by delivering true storage of code, orchestrated entirely and natively through Kubernetes. delivering a consistent hybrid experience across any infrastructure and any cloud. The new capabilities include dynamic storage provisioning, on both flash array and flash blade, as well as unified visibility and support directly via Pure1, enabling containerized workloads to run seamlessly across all the Pure Storage lineup, as well as any third party infrastructure and any cloud. The new port works integrations also extend our capabilities and our integration with VMware tanzu. Now allowing customers to use port works to scale their Kubernetes usage to greater levels with VMware. Shawn Rosemarin: Also new advancements to our Pure1 digital experience. I'm ecstatic to announce first off the Pure1 is building off our success and driving simplicity around the management and optimization of storage. And now delivering a modern self service marketplace for acquire and subscribing to additional IT resources both on prem and in the cloud. This capability leverages our meta engine for AI assisted workload forecasting. And that also includes automated risk analysis for downtime, and ransomware attack protection. Pure1 is the engine that moves us from storage to multi Cloud Data Services, fundamentally helping us to help you to deliver a digital customer experience. That is world class. Now, technology is a critical part of any evolution. But if there's anything we've learned over the last 18 months, we also need the importance of people and process. People transformation, and experiential change are critical parts of any successful transformation. To this end, it's my pleasure to introduce my colleagues, Murali and Prakash Murli will talk about how traditional IT teams need to embrace the modern applications revolution, using it as a springboard for them to become it printers. Prakash will then showcase what a truly digital experience can look and feel like and how it can truly deliver a world class experience. With that, I thank you for your time, Unknown: and I'll turn it over to Marley. Hello, folks, Silicon Valley, the home of Pure Storage is known for entrepreneurship. And I'm personally lucky to have been part of the founding of three companies since coming to the valley in 1982. But it's a mistake to think that the Silicon Valley has a monopoly on entrepreneurship. In fact, the vast majority of innovation is happening in the world today outside this 50 square mile bubble, and is being led by people exactly like you. intrapreneurship is the idea that an individual employee inside a company with the drive smarts and vision to think big, has driven some of the most important game changing products and services we all use today. Steve Jobs talked about this as a big driver at Apple. And the Sony PlayStation is another famous example of this. There are many examples in it as well. AWS is the ultimate example of an internal IT project to support selling books that has become the world's largest public cloud and revolutionized it. Kubernetes is another example. There was an internal project at Google to manage email and search called Borg. IT folks just have the best project names by the way that was spun out as Kubernetes into the open source community. So let's talk about it partnership. You might not know it, but you have all the makings of a successful entrepreneur. Let's look at three things that are common to all types of innovation and entrepreneurship. First, entrepreneurs start with the problem not with the technology. There are many exciting technologies being introduced into the world of it. The hardest thing to do is to identify the big problems you can solve for your team. When you work on well defined problems that are worth solving, then automatically selecting the right technology becomes easier. You find support and funding for your project. Just like an entrepreneur can more easily raise money around solving problems versus technologies and timeline start to fall into place. What is holding your company back from deploying the most impactful modern apps, focus on these issues, and you will move faster and with confidence. So start with the problem, not the technology. Second, innovation starts with people. You all know this, find the Mavericks and champion the risk takers in your organization. This extends to other groups as well. Find allies and upper management in your it partnership journey. A good ally is someone who's not satisfied with the status quo just like yourself, and you don't even have to be in it. You might find a kindred spirit in finance, product development or marketing. Mavericks are everywhere and they will help it's in their nature. Finally, another thing that entrepreneurs do is they recognize that the path to a big win starts with small steps. If your industry is fast food that a big win is license plate recognition, leading to predictive order preparation, digital order taking and contactless payments. Imagine that applied to 1000s of stores at a multinational chain. Wow. If you're a cable company competing with the likes of Netflix, your big win is having analytics data just as fine grained as Netflix on what shows your subscribers are watching. These are transformative big wins. But as they say, every long journey starts with a single small step. I asked you, what small steps can you take today to enable a bright future? So where do you start? Here's an idea to get you thinking. As a service is one of the biggest trends in all of it. salesforce.com started the SAS market. And now most important business applications in the enterprise are delivered as a service, hr eirp, email calendaring. But it's not only these traditional applications that are undergoing a service revolution. So our modern apps, development teams in your organization's are today building AI, ml applications, edge applications, data pipelines, 5g, they need infrastructure to do it. But what they actually want is a service. Here's my challenge to you being an IT printer, and create a services catalog for your internal customers. That gives your users a one click data pipeline platform, a one click search engine, a one click data science environment, all delivered as a service so they can focus on their application. And not on standing up and managing infrastructures, containers Kubernetes. And port works makes this so easy. There are many sessions that accelerate on port works and modern apps as a service. These will help you provide your apps as a service and not just manage infrastructure. In fact, we've just announced that all Pure customers can get started using portlets for free. Let's unleash the it printer in you and innovate together. Thank you all very much. And now here's Prakash thanks Murli. So we really talked about innovation, and SAS ification. And, you know, I like the one click economy approach that he keeps talking about. Now, how do you get there? Well, I know Murli is a maverick. He's been doing it his whole life. But right now, the way you get there is digital. Now, why digital why now 97% of executives say COVID sped up digital transformation. I know, as a husband and a father, that my wife and I manage kids right there their day, their schedule, their education, their zoom online. And I can tell you, if I didn't have the digital power of two ring cameras in two different rooms in my house, telling me when my kid was finishing education, I wouldn't have the data to make it through the day. And think about the data you have in your enterprise. Everything begins with observability. Now, what do you do with all this data? I don't look at the data of whether my kids attending their zoom class on time are finishing their homework on time. Just for my health, I look at it, because I think I want to keep them on track. I want to help troubleshoot. I want to help assess, improve. And we've been doing that with Pure1 for five years and your storage landscape. We've been monitoring the environment, troubleshooting the environment, and we introduced a new capability around assessments. Now, what is all that for? We can use that data to recommend what to do next, to empower you to make decisions. And those decisions could be Do I need to buy more? Do I need to manage more of my landscape? Do I need to operate and it's all on the path to get to the one click economy we really talked about. So let's get into optimize when we're optimizing your landscape. And notice I said we not you we've provided the capability to review and look at storage, virtual machines and containers. And now we do an assessment on ransomware. It's a new capability that will look at your environment and evaluated against external threats. It's kind of silly to say Am I secure? In today's world? It's more important to ask how secure am I? Because, like anything in security, you could always be more secure. You could always have one lock on your house with three locks on your house. So you need assessment levels to threat. The first assessment level could be air gapped and safe mode on The arrays, but you can have physical separation where you know your data stored on another device, you can even ensure that devices under lock and key and you can restore quickly. Now, all of this capability around assessments, then can be used to look at your landscape. Since we've introduced VM analytics, we've had customers deploy with millions of VMs in the landscape. And now you can search that landscape to find the VM, because everything's about getting to the problem sooner. Now, this is activities you could do. What if we could do all of that for you? Well, we can, we now have introduced a new recommendation engine that allows you to go beyond just going into the product and simulating what to do. We look at all of the applications that are deployed, whether it be SAP Oracle or a new modern application, and we've created an application profile. So if you need to place a new workload, whether it's an SAP workload when you don't know what to do, we'll help you place it on your system. If it's an existing workload, and you need to clone it from one system to another, we can run all of those simulations. We can even take a look at your entire landscape because in storage, what do you need, you typically need more performance, or you need more capacity. And evergreen allows you to add both performance and capacity non disruptively. So will now tell you which evergreen upgrade you should take whether it's I just need to add more space or I need higher performance. And with Pure as-a-service, we've gone further. It's a vendor problem to manage your environment, we sign up to deliver you an SLA. And we've taken the fleet intelligence where you can choose your application workload, whether it be an Oracle workload, an in memory, database workload. And once you've chosen the workloads and what performance and capacity level you need, we can recommend what service tier you should sign up for all with the power of recommendations based on AI ops. Now, finally, we can give you all the recommendations in the world, you know, I can tell my kids to, you know, get good grades in school, but it's up to them to listen. Well, we now empower you. To subscribe to new service offerings, we've expanded our service catalog, which we launched last year, they include new offerings, whether it be cloud block store for Azure port works, or even our professional services offerings. And we provide you end to end transparency in your decision making. So when you order something, we'll tell you where your order statuses. And not only you but the partners you empower, because we've introduced a new partner persona, where partners can see order fulfillment and tracking. And finally, a big problem in our industry has always been software updates. You can schedule and automate purity operating system updates, with our new scheduling capability, all based on the Self Service, digital capability we've made available to this is the one click economy. I think morleys challenged you to create the one click economy. And this is the one click economy we're creating for you. So what does this all mean? It means that we want you to subscribe to the service economy. We believe that the future is being server sized for traditional applications, and modern applications for developers, and traditional storage administrators, and peers a service was one of the first Apex driven and SLA driven outcomes in the industry. And even today, it remains highly differentiated is an SLA oriented outcome where you sign up for performance and capacity, not a hardware box. Because if we didn't deliver the right performance, or I ops will deliver a new box. Why? Because we can observe your landscape. This is what the service oriented economy is all about. I also discussed how these new applications are going to force us to rethink our choices of infrastructure. Specifically, how we buy storage, how we consume it, really encouraging us to look at new partners, and embrace data services that extend to any infrastructure, and any cloud. My colleague Murli then outlined how traditional IT organizations can really embrace these modern apps, this modern apps revolution and become it printers, thereby becoming the catalyst for driving transformation and growth within their respective companies. And Prakash showed us what a real digital experience can look like, and how crucial it will be in delivering a positive customer experience to your customers. We also revealed our announcements, extending the power of Port works for modern applications across both flash array, flash blade and any infrastructure and also new enhancements to Pure1 that bring digital self service to a whole other level.
